Starting my first blog on Thanksgiving weekend. I can take some time to reflect on those aspects of my most recent production for which I am grateful.
Directing Everyman was a great artistic stretch for me and for the students. Discovering and developing the contemporary relevance of a 15th c. morality play really challenged and enriched all of us. I loved the idea of giving the production a gritty urban edge and also finding subtle ways to establish the setting as "somewhere NU." Each cast and crew member rose to the occasion of creating a true "concept play" and I know I was pleased with the results.
Although our house counts were fairly small, those who did see the show seemed genuinely moved. Our most exciting show was the student matinee in week two - a first for the Drama Program at Northwest University. At the special invitation of NU's Admissions Department, the Millard Theatre was filled with invited high school students from public and private schools. The Q & A afterwards proved engaging and entertaining for audience and cast members alike. I hope to see this event become a regular part of productions at NU!
